We live amongst people who actually celebrate death. Religion causes people not to take death seriously and that's my biggest problem with it. Let's help them understand a simple truth: They DO NOT KNOW heaven is real! They're only pretending to know because it gives them comfort. It's obviously a coping mechanism to alleviate the fear of death. For some people, life without religion would be unbearable. They need their religion just to function, especially when friends and family members die... "How can people make sense of tragedy? Religion provides an answer — not a good one, but an answer that most people think they need. Belief in God is very consoling in the face of tragedy and death. Atheism doesn’t offer real consolation on this point." — Sam Harris I know that this world is nightmarish because of death and the constant threat of oblivion, so I can sympathize with people's need for delusion. But I still think they'd be better off without the false comfort, because I truly believe the fear of death is a powerful ally for someone who is trying to live forever. When I became an atheist, that's when I really got serious about everything. This was the only life I had (as far as I know), so I had to live extremely prudently and cautiously to increase my odds of success. I had to safeguard my EXISTENCE at all costs!!! As an atheist, eternal life became my NEW GOD. The fear of death caused me to become a perfectionist with my health and safety and think deeply about every aspect of my survival strategy. People who lack fear tend to get careless and clumsy and are more likely to die in general. Yes, they might be happier people overall, but if they're more likely to die because of it, it's not worth it. I'd much rather suffer the painful truth of reality and get to live forever. Emotional or physical suffering is not the worst that could happen to you. Non-existence is.
