The claim of "certainty" and/or "security" is a common religious coping mechanism. Most religious people just can't accept the possibility of failing at eternal life. Obviously by his words, you can tell that someone like Pastor Tom has no fear of failing, which is precisely why he is more likely to fail! Being overconfident leads to an attitude of fearlessness, which in turn makes people more apt to fail at eternal life. The fear of failure makes people powerful because it causes them to try harder and prevents them from getting careless.
