If our life ends with oblivion, then what's the point of anything?! Oblivion makes life utterly pointless because nothing LASTS. Fame, money, relationships, love, success, glory, pleasure, and everything else — all of these supposed accomplishments are ONLY on lone to us... If we DIE, then we can't KEEP ANYTHING. Many people say they'd be satisfied with a "much longer life", but they don't need "eternity"... Personally, that doesn't make sense to me. If you're not planning on living forever then, what? You're planning on being dead. It's a suicidal attitude that I cannot respect. Even a billion years should not be enough time for a self-respecting person who cherishes their existence. If we eventually die then all our effort was for nothing. Given that our only 2 options are LIVING FOREVER or DEATH... The choice is obvious. We must STRIVE for immortality, but the use of the word "strive" is crucial here. We can never say that we HAVE "immortality" — as in, the inability to die — because we cannot know our future with certainty, considering the huge list of threats that could kill us. Therefore, our eternal life can never be completely secure, which is what the word "immortality" implies. But immortality is certainly the GOAL that we should work towards. If we cure aging, live prudently, and use technology to our advantage, then we may come very close to being invulnerable to death... but the world is continually changing — a new danger is always lurking around the corner. Living forever will literally be a never-ending process, which is what makes eternal life so difficult. You can never say that you've achieved it, because eternity KEEPS GOING! This is why you mustn't let your guard down or you could so easily fail and get nothing.
